In Year 5 we aim to provide children with an enjoyable, inclusive, challenging and real-world curriculum that inspires future thinkers, innovators and problem solvers in a captivating environment that stimulates and supports high quality teaching and learning in range of subjects.
Over the course of the year, Year 5 pupils will have access to inspiring, exciting, meaningful and creative learning experiences so that they are happy, confident, healthy, responsible and informed citizens that are prepared for a successful adult life. We aim for all Year 5 pupils to achieve their full potential and to continually share their knowledge and skills with the local and global community.
Each term, the curriculum maps will be posted on to this website page so that you can see what will be covered per half term. One important thing you can do to encourage your child to take an interest in the topics, is to take them to the library. There are many books which can be borrowed from your local library that link to the topics we will be covering. They can be read and discussed with your child, as well as brought to school to share with the rest of Year 5. We also encourage additional research and practice at home of key skills to promote better progress.
We typically supplement the learning that takes place in Year 5 with Internal workshops and External visits to places of interest. Further details will be provided later in the year once these events have been booked.
Year 5 Reading
In Year 5, we continue to emphasise the importance of reading. Guided Reading lessons will take place every week during which Year 5 pupils will develop the skill of reading aloud a wider range of poetry and books written at an age-appropriate interest level with accuracy and at a reasonable speaking pace. Pupils will also be given the opportunity to increase their familiarity with a wide range of books, including myths, legends and traditional stories, modern fiction, fiction from our literary heritage, and books from other cultures and traditions. By the end of Year 5, pupils should be able to understand what they read, draw inferences, predict what might happen next, summarise the main ideas drawn from one paragraph and read most words effortlessly. Additionally, pupils should be able to work out how to pronounce unfamiliar written words with increasing automaticity.
Year 5 Writing
Year 5 pupils will be taught spellings, vocabulary, grammar, punctuation, what standard of handwriting is appropriate for a particular task, and how to plan, draft, write, evaluate, edit, and proof-read their writing that covers a range of different genres.
Year 5 Maths
Year 5 pupils will be taught place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, percentages, measurement, properties of shapes, position and direction. Additionally, we will also cover how to undertake mental calculations with increasingly large numbers and more complex calculations. Pupils will continue to use all the multiplication tables to calculate mathematical statements in order to maintain their fluency.
Year 5 Science
Year 5 pupils will be learning about Forces, Earth and Space, Properties and changes of materials, Animals including humans, and Living things and their habitats.
We will cover a range of topics including the: Extreme Earth, Rivers, United Kingdom, Ancient Greeks, Vikings, Anglo Saxons, WW1, Henri Rousseau, Origami, Paper Mache, Mosaics, Soft Pastel experimentation, and Still life sketching of plants.
We will change library books and class reading books once a week on Monday. We would appreciate it if you could listen to your child read; they should be reading at least three times a week. The children are expected to record their remarks in their Reading Record and record new vocabulary in their Vocabulary Books. Please use the Home Reading Activities Card to further support your child’s reading. Your child will have access to the Bug Club website, where children can independently read a wide range of books online.
Spellings will be given out on Mondays and will be tested the following Monday.
PE kits are due in on Tuesdays.
Homework will be given out on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.
Diaries are to be signed by Monday for 5PR and Friday for 5HS.
