At Guru Nanak Sikh Academy the Panjabi department has excellent resources and offers a variety of extracurricular activities including the annual Talent and Cultural Show where students can perform in front of friends and family. We also encourage our students to write their own poems and take part in competitions.

A Level study of Panjabi provides many opportunities to develop students understanding of spiritual, moral and cultural issues. Throughout the course candidates will be encouraged to form opinions and make judgments within the appropriate context; historical or contemporary, ethnic or religious.

Key Stage 3

Year 7

Any students who enter the school at beginner level are well supported with an emphasis on listening and speaking skills. Proper guidance will be given on the pronunciation of different sounds and hard words.  Reading and writing will be limited to the introduction, recognition and formation of letters and the joining of different letters to form words. As a result pupils should be able to write their names and about 50 words within their first year. They should also be able to count 1 to 50 in Punjabi. The pupils who are in the advanced groups will work on writing and reading skills.

Year 8

In the second year all the activities will have clearly defined communication purposes will be on listening and speaking skills. Reading and writing work in this year will take place at three levels as well.

  • Health & Welfare
  • Dress & Design & shopping,
  • Travel and Tourism

Year 9

Students should have good vocabulary and good command of the language at this stage. For good pronunciation reading will be out-loud in the classroom and students will be encouraged for more independent writing e.g small messages, leaving notes, post cards and formal- informal letters.

Students that are ready will start their GCSE.

Assessment in Key Stage 3:

Informal assessments take place during lessons. Formal assessments are every term for speaking and listening, reading & writing and individual targets are set for each student to progress.

Key Stage 4 – Panjabi GCSE

For all purposes, students will be expected, as they progress linguistically, to:

  • Cope with a greater degree of unpredictability.
  • Deal with widening range of potential problems, range of vocabulary and structures, including some unfamiliar language.
  • Understand issues and opinions.
  • Discuss issues and give opinions.

Language will be considered transferable, as appropriate, to any topic and students should be able to understand and provide information and opinions about these contexts relating to the student's own Lifestyle, Leisure, Home and Environment, Work and Education and that of other people, including people in countries/communities where Panjabi is spoken.

Key Stage 5

AS and A Level courses in Panjabi  will appeal to students who have an interest in reading a wide range of literature from the past and the present and enjoy expressing their opinion and justifying their comments on text.
